Academy

What a working artist actually knows.

Foxbristle Academy is where Mariana publishes her teaching — drawing and painting both. Practice sheets to print, and books to draw in. Every lesson names the materials it wants, because that is how she learned them.

Foxbristle Academy

For anyone learning
to draw and paint.

One page, one idea, twenty minutes. Drawing first, because it is where painting starts — then color, mixing and paint handling.

Foxbristle Cubs

For children, told
as a story.

The same lessons in pictures and about nine words a page, with a fox to draw them for. Ten minutes each, one pencil.

Every sheet is free to print.

How the lessons work

One idea at a time.

One sheet, one idea

A sheet that teaches four things teaches none of them. Each one fixes a single thing that makes a drawing look wrong.

Drawn, not described

You copy a picture, not a paragraph. The words are there to name what your hand is already doing.

The materials are named

Every sheet says what it wants — a 2B, a stick of vine charcoal, paper with a little tooth. Nothing you cannot find.

Short enough to finish

Twenty minutes for the Academy sheets, ten for the Cubs ones. A lesson you abandon halfway teaches nothing either.

Everything taught here was learned at the easel.
